Along the Langtang Khola

We left Syabrubensi and headed eastwards along Langtang Khola (River), its banks rising steeply on both sides, blanketed with spring hues of golden yellow, sienna and green. After a night at Lama Hotel, we reached Ghora Tabela, a Tibetan Refugee Resettlement Project that now resembled more of a small alpine village, with flowering plants adorning the windows of its cottages. Above the tree line, we trod into Langtang Village, then followed a path filled with row after row of mani wall - a staunch echo of Buddhism in a timeless land - that led us into Kyangjin Gompa (3749m), the base for our climbing operations.

Three Training Peaks

Kyangin Ri (4773m) was our first test ground. In the wee hours of the morning with the Milky Way above us, we picked our way up the mountain trail. As we gained height, the morning sun began to paint the mountains across the valley an orange tint. A false summit festooned with prayer flags marked the halfway point. Another one and a half hours of ridge walking saw us at the summit, congratulating ourselves with shots of Langtang Lirung and Naya Kanga as backdrops.
